One of the most popular Nintendo characters is back, and it’s time to ride! Download Mario Kart 64 to your Nintendo Wii U. The original game from 1996 is remade a bit, but the original speedy adventure spirit is preserved.
Mario Kart 64 Concept 5/5
In fact, it’s just a racing arcade, inhabited by characters from the famous Mario franchise. Along with Mario and Luigi, we can play as Toad, Yoshi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Wario and Donkey Kong. Select your character and try to surpass the others in the racing track in three laps!
The carts you ride are identical, but you have the advantage of manual control, so other players are not as hard to beat. But you can always do better than you did last time!
As you ride, you can collect items falling on the track that may give you some bonus. The tracks themselves vary, so what you’ve learnt from one track will be useless in another.
Being simple in its basics, the game offers 4 different modes and 32 tracks to ride. You can ride against virtual rivals, against time, or one-on-one. The Wii U version, being remade, introduces local multiplayer mode with up to four players.
Visuals Effects 5/5
Frankly speaking, it depends on whether you like 1990s’ games or not. Though for Virtual Console service the developers reworked it a little, it still looks so 1990s, with poor backgrounds, too bright cartoonish colors and as many details as makes sense on analog TVs and 1990s consoles. If you don’t like it, you’ll call it “miserable”; if you do, the word is “authentic”.
Audio Effects 4/5
The music is funky and upbeat. The karts are roaring loudly, and the sound of the brakes is still ear-breaking, Not that the music will be the reason to play this game; 1990s had lots of better music. But it completes the overall retro experience, and the job is marked as done.
That’s where Nintendo works perfectly. The console offers all the controls you need to play this game both on TV and on its own tiny screen. Though Virtual Console means some intermedia between the game itself and the firmware of the console, the game responds quickly, in no noticeable time. That part of the game causes no complaint at all.
Replay Value 5/5
So what can we say in Mario Kart 64 review about the game already older than some of its players, but is still playable? The time test is passed. Anyway, the best Nintendo games have always been about something above just visuals, offering the experience with a special charisma. And Mario series provides tons of this charisma, as games it features are made with a little bit of soul.
Mario Kart 64 is revived for a reason; it looks just as alive on consoles of 2010s as it did in late 1990s. The game is a vivid and energetic racing arcade with real involving immersion, speed and fun, so if you download Mario Kart 64 to your Wii U, you can either relive your childhood or experience the gameplay with something from arcade renaissance.
If you happen to own Nintendo Wii U with Virtual Console, Mario Kart 64 is one of the games forming the eternal golden fund, and it’s worth having.
Pros : Great energetic gameplay;
Lots of tracks and modes;
Mario and all the characters we love from the origin;
Cons : · The game may seem too obsolete on newer devices;
· You may have already got bored of it before.
