Cuphead is an arcade with simple 2D gameplay but a complicated story with a lot of twists. Looking like an old masterpiece of animation, it combines old-school manner and modern power. Download Cuphead to enjoy that great combination of the actual and the eternal!
Cuphead Concept 5/5
The backstory of this game is mystical, terrible and fun at the same time. Cuphead and Mugman are the two kids with a strange similarity to dinnerware, living in some conservative province. Gambling served them bad: they owe their souls to the Devil. And now they have to collect other people’s souls, or Satan will take their own. Luckily, their tutor Elder Kettle tells them the right way to act. But the adventures only begin…
The game is a classical run-and-gun that was born so late after its genre that it’s even fun to see it grows now. You run through the 2D terrain and shoot everyone who wants to kill you (and some indifferent creatures, too). That’s the rule, and don’t think that collecting souls is easy!
Easily mastered and controlled, this game will hardly be a cult to spend many hours at, but surely it makes a great casual game and maybe a little more.
Visuals Effects 5/5
The game looks like it was drawn (or, at least produced) by Walt Disney himself. The developers were obviously inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, and they highlight it. Everything, from fonts to the way the characters move, reminds of that golden era. That’s much deeper back than shmup games! And that’s what transfers the visuals and the gameplay from “obsolete” to “retro-styled” league.
Audio Effects 5/5
Of course, the music, the voices the characters pretend to speak (or rather scat), and the sounds they produce are great to hear. The game sounds just the way it looks: way too old-fashioned to call it obsolete. It’s rather that noble sort of conservatism that never grows too old.
The game is only developed for PC, and It’s controlled with a keyboard mostly. It only utilizes arrow keys to move (no WASD, Mr. Disney never applied that!), and some letter keys for certain actions. As you go through the tutorial, double jumping or diagonal shooting can seem complicated, but the skill comes with practice. You can use a gamepad or remap action keys in Options, if you wish.
Replay Value 5/5
Run-and-gun games are hypnotizing. Once you succeed to the next level, it gets hard to repeat. Besides that, there are too many mini-games and twists for just one Cuphead review. So do not fool yourself: if you like it, you’re here for long. And after you’re through, you’ll sometimes find yourself playing Cuphead – just because it looks and sounds perfectly out of any time.
Cuphead is one of the most modern-looking old-school games, and its success is real. If you like it after some time test, you’ll find all of its elements in this relatively new game. So welcome to Cuphead, and join the absurd adventure with wild heroes on the devilish trip!
Even if you prefer other sorts of games, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/p/cuphead/9njrx71m5x9pand give it a chance; maybe, it’s your next favourite.
Pros : Brilliant visuals and music;
Lots of bosses to kill;
Rich fantasy of the developers.
Cons : The game seems too big for its tiny genre;
Minor bugs still present;
Harder than its casual looks suggest.
