Prison Architect is a long and hard story of an architect building a prison for keeping the most dangerous criminals in. Download Prison Architect and build the facility up from the foundation to execution room… Or try to escape it!

Prison Architect Concept 5/5

The idea of the game is just what it says on the tin. The prison is about to host some very dangerous criminal sentenced to capital punishment, and it builds a special facility to keep him in until his “big day”. You’re to build it by that time.

There’s a lot of factors you need to consider while building. It’s too much of luxury to build such a facility for one man, so there will be other prisoners and guards. So they should be taken care of: walls and security system to keep them in, dining and recreation rooms to keep the prisoners satisfied (okay, not fully satisfied, but not angry at least) to prevent a riot. And of course, it needs the camera for the execution act.

When you have built it, you need to check whether it’s durable and comfortable enough both for prisoners and for guards. If it does, you may upload it to Steam for the next mode. Finally, there is a multiplayer mode introduced in late 2018, so players can cooperate while building.

You can try being a prisoner trying to escape the prison (of course, it will be random, not the one you’ve built). The prisons can be downloaded right within the app. So you are both building walls and breaking free.

And mind the story: it’s been written by a professional writer, to make the experience emotional and immersive.

Visuals Effects 4/5

On, it’s so 1990s when you take the first glance. The game is made in 2D top-down projection, and the object and the characters look very schematic. Yet when you start playing you see that this manner is logical for an architect game. Besides the in-game reasons, this attitude to visuals can make the game easier to launch on dated and low-budget machines, making Prison Architect one of fewer options.

Audio Effects 4/5

The audio part of the game tried to emulate a movie as hard as the visual part does; but creating proper sounds turned out easier. Phone calls and building sounds, prison background noise and audio response to your actions create a sonic immersion that completes the experience of doing a dirty complicated work.

Controls 5/5

It just takes a mouse to select the objects and to place them on the map. All the materials and tools are available from a special menu in the left lower corner. It depends more on your strategical wit than on your immediate reaction to succeed in this game, so take your time both for learning the rules and for planning this current project. At any rate, you’ll learn it deeper as you play.

Replay Value 5/5

Like a living paradox, you as an architect are the freest man in the prison, deciding what to do and how to make your building. So there are lots of possibilities. When you play an escaping prisoner, you can access thousands of prisons built by other players. So its replayability seems almost inexhaustible.

Summary

This Prison Architect review may need rewriting soon, as the game has been recently acquired by Paradox Interactive, and this may result in some reworking. But so far it’s a great retro-styled game that requires logic and wit.

Conclusion

Hurry to download Prison Architect, if you’ve been missing a game for your gray matter.

Pros : Both building and escape modes;
Great narrative by a professional writer;
Multiplayer mode;
Low system requirements.

Cons : So 1990s visuals;
Multiplayer can be glitchy.
