Professional Review

Souls is an indie visual novel. It tells the story of the unique relationship between a student and the beast, who lives in the school's reservoir. You can download Souls on PC and enjoy the original story.

Souls Concept 4/5

One day at school there were spread rumors that a monster hides in the reservoir. The main character, the Boy, went there and found this beast, called the Human Snake. Between them developed a mysterious relationship. It can't be called real friendship, and it doesn't resemble family relations. This connection, in which the Boy and the monster influence on each other, changes the main characters.

In our Souls Review, we can say that all you need to do is to follow the storyline. The game isn’t overloaded with unnecessary quests and actions that would distract the attention of the player.

There appear many questions. What is the real appearance of the Human Snake, and why did this beast appear at school? With the story moving, unexpectable events happen in the life of the Boy. Is it possible to know their causes and reveal all the secrets? This game makes you think about these events in light of philosophy.

Visual Effects 3/5

Graphics in Souls is too simple. There are no details at all, even the faces of the characters aren’t drawn. You can see only the basic outlines, and there is no animation. The background is blurred a bit, and sometimes it’s presented by mystical watercolor paintings. Occasionally there appear some pictures that may horrify the player because they show blood and violence. All in all, simplicity and scantiness of graphics don’t affect the quality of the game too much.

Audio Effects 5/5

Soundtrack in Souls is magnificent. You sink in the melody that mirrors the Boy’s fears and hopes. Listening to the soundtrack, it’s possible to tune into the beat of people’s problems. Music in the game presents a marvelous mix of sorrowful singing and calm melody. Anyway, it is neither very depressive nor monotonous.

Controls 4/5

There isn’t much to say about controls in this indie game because it’s a visual novel. You just need to click and watch the continuation. Souls would befit those people who don’t like to press complex combinations and react quickly. We would say that usually there don’t appear any problems with controls.

Replay Value 2/5

Replay Value in Souls is low because the whole game is based on the storyline. Of course, someone would like to experience this rich specter of emotions again. But for many people, that have already finished the storyline, it won’t be interesting to play-through. There are no side quests or something else that will reveal new aspects of the game.

This indie project can strike your imagination and make you think about philosophical problems. First of all, its main feature is the storyline, gameplay, and mechanics are a side bet. While playing-through you may think that you can guess how the game would end. But it’s unlikely that you would be right. Download Souls and learn this unusual story.

This project is remarkable, and it bears no resemblance to other indie games. You definitely should try it.

Pros : Amazing storyline;
Surprising ending;
Unexpectedly thrilling soundtrack.

Cons : Not fabulous graphics.
