Professional Review

Papers, Please is a simulator game for PC, in which you check citizens' IDs and other documents. Depending on the info provided, you're free to let them in or keep them away from Arstozka — the fictional communist country. Detect terrorists, keep families apart or let them reunite and decide the fate of the citizens — Papers, Please download will give it all to you.

Graphics 4.5/5

The game's looks are extremely unconventional. Papers, Please system requirements are minimal: the game is only 100 MB or so. And it's an intensely minimalistic title, where everything — IDs, people, armed guards, checkpoints, makeshift pipe bombs — are made of pixels. And there's some elusive charm about this artwork choice. When you're playing Papers, Please, you can't get rid of the feel that you're watching an anti-utopia cartoon, in which you're given the role of ultimate evil or good.

Gameplay 4.5/5

Papers, Please gameplay concept puts you in the shoes of a clerk, who checks IDs. Depending on the info from the papers, citizens' looks, body search and other nuances you can let them in Arstozka or deny the entry. And that's where the emotional part of the game comes into play: you can ruin whole lives or show compassion towards those poor pixelated people.

However, you can't afford to be too kind-hearted or negligent. If you allow every single body in, you risk to let a terrorist get through the checkpoint, which will result in a bombing, shooting, etc. Innocent people die, and you face severe punishment: part of the money or medications will be confiscated from your family. As a result, some of its members may perish. And it will be only your fault.

Controls 5/5

For checking documents, you will need to use the mouse mostly. Later you'll unlock keyboard controls: Space for Inspection mode, Tab for showing/hiding stamps. Controls are easy, but if you play a time-limited mode, you'll need a good reaction and agile hands.

Replay Value 4.5/5

Some may find Papers, Please game a bit monotonous. But in fact, checking documents and deciding people's fates (including your own) is quite captivating. If you doubt it, try a Papers, Please torrent as a demo first. The game will suck you in momentarily.

Conclusion

Full of choices, dangers and dilemmas, Papers, Please really keeps you on your toes. It's like a brain-surgeon simulator — you can't afford a single mistake. This is why being focused and paying attention to the smallest details is very important here. Our Paper Please review recommends the game to everyone, who enjoys detective work and finding a solution in a difficult situation when the clock is ticking.
