Professional Review

Rust is a survival game set in a post-apocalyptic society. Rusty are your tools; rusty are our souls. Download Rust to taste what they call “one of the cruellest game on Earth”.

Rust Concept 5/5

The idea of Rust has been tested in post-apocalyptic movies and novels, describing a dog-eat-dog reality after the end of the world as we know it. You find yourself on some shore, almost naked, with as few tools, weapons and food as can be, and eager to live on. Beware: you won’t be the only inhabitant of this land; for some other humans you’re just walking meat.

If you’re lucky enough, you won’t get killed at your first encounter, and you can build some home for yourself, craft tools and weapons, start hunting and sleeping regularly to avoid hunger and tiredness. You can even go into some diplomacy to form leagues and build towns over this abandoned land, and so on.

Like characters of The Mysterious Island, you have nothing but your hands in the beginning, but the whole world to build if you know how. To play you need to connect to some server; along with official ones, there are ones by fans, often accepting obsolete versions of the game.

Visuals Effects 5/5

Rust features first-person view and greatly made environment, with select interactive elements. The human figures look even more natural than some puritan criticist would approve on; when there’s nudity, then it’s absolute, and when there’s blood, it’s red. If you like it as natural and exposed as can be, it’s the right sort of game for you.

Audio Effects 5/5

The game mostly doesn’t need any music; on the other hand, the sound effect of distant steps, cracks, shots and screams are enough to complete the picture of something-going-on-out-there. No need to buy studio quality speakers just for this game, but if you have your home cinema built around your PC, you’ll appreciate what it brings.

Controls 4/5

No matter if you use a gamepad or a keyboard/mouse set. It’s obvious how to move, but some actions are quite unusual, and sometimes they’re even weird. For example, dismounting (unlike mounting) doesn’t show as an option on the screen, not even a hint, and you have to guess how it’s done by yourself.

Replay Value 5/5

Definitely one of the most replayable game, because you’ll just have to replay it more often than you’d like. But as you master survival, crafting and diplomacy, you get more and more curious to see what else the game has in store (literally and figuratively). Being server-bound, the game rolls out updates so Rust review may need to be rewritten soon.

Summary

It’s the world after the civilization, with morals and attitudes degraded to a caveman mentality, yet your technical skill and diplomacy can provide you survival even in this unfriendly place. But prepare: Rust may require too much of your precious time, especially if you play in a team.

Conclusion

Rust is the game to live in, and it might take many hours to get skills and even more when you’re skilled. Download Rust and see how great an indie survival can get.

Pros : Large open world;
Advanced system of crafting;
Great to play with both gamepad and keyboard;
Good visuals and sounds;
Cynical and realistic vision of the post-apocalypse.

Cons : Too much cruelty and nudity (if it’s no pro);
Official servers provide hard training;
Controls not clear enough;
May steal too many hours.
